About the Tournament

What is the Ranji Trophy?

The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket tournament. Organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it is the country's most important state-level red-ball cricket competition. The tournament was first played in the 1934-35 season and was named after Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the famous Indian-born cricketer who represented England. Unlike franchise-based competitions such as the Indian Premier League, the Ranji Trophy is built around domestic cricket teams representing states, regions and cricket associations. For players, the competition is an important stage in the Indian cricket pathway. Consistent performances in first-class cricket can lead to opportunities at higher domestic and international levels. The tournament is also an important part of India's red-ball cricket culture. Batters are tested for technique and concentration, while bowlers need the stamina and discipline to perform over long spells.

History & Records

Ranji Trophy History & Winners

The Ranji Trophy history stretches back more than nine decades. The inaugural competition was played in 1934-35 and the tournament has since become the backbone of India's domestic first-class structure. The competition was named after Ranjitsinhji, the celebrated cricketer who played international cricket for England and became one of the most recognisable figures associated with early Indian cricket. Over the decades, the Ranji Trophy has been dominated by several major domestic cricket teams. Mumbai in particular has established a remarkable record and is the most successful team in the competition's history. Other historically important sides include Karnataka, Delhi, Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Saurashtra, all of which have contributed significantly to Indian domestic cricket.

Why is the Ranji Trophy Important?

The Ranji Trophy remains one of the most important competitions in Indian cricket because it provides players with regular exposure to high-level first-class cricket. T20 cricket rewards explosive batting and short, high-intensity bowling spells. First-class cricket requires a different set of skills. Players need to manage sessions, build partnerships, bowl long spells and adapt to changing match conditions. This makes the Ranji Trophy particularly valuable for players preparing for the demands of Test cricket. It also gives selectors an extended opportunity to evaluate a player's consistency rather than relying on a single short-format performance. The tournament also strengthens state-level cricket across India and gives emerging players a competitive environment in which they can develop their game.
