About IPL Standings

What is the IPL Points Table?

The IPL points table is the official standings chart of the Indian Premier League. It ranks all 10 franchises based on matches played, wins, losses, no-results, total points and Net Run Rate (NRR). The points table is updated after every match and is the single most important reference for fans tracking the playoff race throughout the season.

During the IPL 2027 league stage, each team plays 14 matches. Every win earns a team 2 points, while matches with no result (typically due to rain) award 1 point to each side. At the end of the league stage, the top four teams on the points table advance to the playoffs: the top two play Qualifier 1, the third and fourth placed teams contest the Eliminator, and the winners progress toward the final.

Historically, teams generally need around 16 points (8 wins) to feel safe about playoff qualification, although teams with 14 points and a strong NRR have also qualified on several occasions. You can also follow India’s international schedule ahead of IPL 2027, including the India vs Afghanistan T20I Series 2026, the Asian Games Cricket 2026 and the India vs West Indies ODI Series 2026.

How Points Are Awarded

IPL Points System Explained

Understanding how teams accumulate points and how ties are broken on the IPL points table.

2

Win = 2 Points

A team earns 2 points for every victory during the 14-match league stage.

1

No Result = 1 Point

If a match is abandoned due to rain or other reasons, both teams receive 1 point each.

0

Loss = 0 Points

The losing team receives no points, making every defeat costly in the playoff race.

NRR

Net Run Rate

The primary tiebreaker. Calculated as runs scored per over minus runs conceded per over across all matches.

Net Run Rate (NRR) is the most important tiebreaker on the IPL points table. A positive NRR means a team has scored runs faster than it has conceded them — an indicator of overall dominance. NRR becomes critically important late in the season when multiple teams finish level on points, and it can even decide playoff qualification on the final day of the league stage.

In the rare event that two teams are level on both points and NRR, the tie is resolved by the head-to-head result between the teams during the league stage. This is why every match, even between mid-table sides, can have playoff implications.

Playoff Race

IPL 2027 Qualification Scenarios

What each team typically needs to qualify for the IPL 2027 playoffs, and the key scenarios fans should watch during the business end of the season.

Scenario
18+ Points — Near Guaranteed
Teams finishing with 9 or more wins (18+ points) have historically always qualified for the playoffs. Only 14 teams across 19 seasons have reached 18 points, and every one of them made the top four.
Scenario
16 Points — Strong Position
With 8 wins (16 points), a team qualifies in the vast majority of seasons. A healthy NRR usually settles any tie at this level in the team’s favour.
Scenario
14 Points — Depends on NRR
Seven wins (14 points) puts a team in contention but rarely guarantees qualification. Net Run Rate and the results of other mid-table teams decide the outcome. Several teams with 14 points have missed out, while others have qualified on NRR.
Scenario
12 Points or Fewer — Eliminated
Teams finishing on 12 points or below have almost never qualified for the IPL playoffs. Only in one exceptional season did a team with 12 points make the top four.
Scenario
Final Weekend Drama
The last 2–3 days of the league stage regularly feature multiple teams level on 14–16 points fighting for the final playoff spot. Matches are effectively knockout games, and NRR swings of a single big win or heavy loss can reshuffle the entire table overnight.
Scenario
Top Two Advantage
Finishing in the top two is a major advantage — the Qualifier 1 winner goes straight to the final, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2. Teams ranked 3rd and 4th must win three straight knockout matches to lift the trophy.
Road to the Final

How the Top Four Teams Progress

The playoff pathway for teams finishing in the top four of the IPL points table.

Q1

Qualifier 1 — 1st vs 2nd

The top two teams on the points table face off. The winner advances directly to the Final.

E

Eliminator — 3rd vs 4th

The third and fourth placed teams clash. The loser is eliminated; the winner plays Qualifier 2.

Q2

Qualifier 2

The Qualifier 1 loser faces the Eliminator winner for the second spot in the IPL final.

F

The Final

Qualifier 1 winner vs Qualifier 2 winner compete for the IPL 2027 championship trophy.

This structure, in place since 2011, rewards consistency during the league stage. The top two teams effectively get two bites at the final, while teams finishing third and fourth must navigate a sudden-death path through the Eliminator and Qualifier 2.

Why Fans Follow the IPL Points Table So Closely

The IPL points table is the heartbeat of the tournament narrative. Because every team plays 14 matches across roughly seven weeks, the standings shift constantly — a single weekend can lift a team from sixth to second, or drop a playoff contender out of the top four entirely.

The points table also drives fan conversations around qualification scenarios: “How many wins do we need?”, “Can we still qualify on NRR?”, “What happens if we lose our last three games?” These permutations make the league stage as compelling as the playoffs themselves, particularly during the final week when multiple teams are level on points.

Between IPL seasons, cricket fans can also follow India’s international calendar. The national side’s T20 commitments include the India vs Afghanistan T20I Series 2026 and multi-team events like the Asian Games Cricket 2026, while the ODI side prepares through the India vs West Indies ODI Series 2026 ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle.
