About IPL

What is the Indian Premier League?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s biggest and most-watched T20 franchise cricket competition. Launched by the BCCI in 2008, the tournament features 10 city-based franchises competing in a round-robin league stage followed by playoffs. The IPL has revolutionised cricket with its mix of top international stars, emerging Indian talent, entertainment and massive fan engagement.

The 2027 season marks the landmark 20th edition of the IPL, and the BCCI is planning grand celebrations to commemorate two decades of the tournament. The 2027 edition is the final season of the 2023–27 broadcast and sponsorship cycle, with a mini auction scheduled for December 2026 rather than a mega auction — meaning most squads will remain largely intact from 2026.

You can also explore other major competitions, including the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), SPL and T20 Mumbai League.

Season 2027

IPL 2027 Season Summary

The IPL 2027 season is scheduled to begin in March 2027 and conclude with the final in May 2027. As the 20th edition, the BCCI is expected to pull out all stops for celebrations, with potential innovations in broadcast, fan engagement and on-field presentation.

The tournament will follow the 74-match format introduced in recent seasons, with each of the 10 teams playing 14 league matches (7 home, 7 away) before the playoffs. The Impact Player rule will continue for the 2027 season, allowing teams to substitute one player during the match. The salary cap has been set at INR 157 crore per franchise, up from previous seasons.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) enter IPL 2027 as defending champions after winning their maiden title in 2026. Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB will look to become only the third team after CSK and MI to successfully defend an IPL title.

Each franchise must submit their list of retained players by 15 November 2026. The auction will take place in Goa, with the BCCI expected to announce the final date in October 2026. Teams can use their remaining purse after retentions to bid for released players and overseas talents.
