About Vijay Hazare Trophy

What is the Vijay Hazare Trophy?

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India’s premier domestic List A cricket competition, organised annually by the BCCI. Contested by 38 teams representing Indian states, union territories and regional cricket associations, it is the country’s most important 50-over tournament outside international cricket. The competition serves as the primary platform for Indian cricketers to showcase their one-day skills and press for national selection.

Originally introduced as the Ranji One Day Trophy in 1993-94, the tournament was restructured and renamed in 2007-08 in honour of Vijay Hazare, the legendary Indian batsman who captained India to its first Test series win and was a pioneer of Indian cricket. The modern format was established in 2002-03 with a group-based structure.

The 2026-27 season follows India’s international white-ball commitments, including the India vs West Indies ODI series and the India vs Afghanistan T20I series. You can also follow India’s campaign at the Asian Games Cricket 2026 for more limited-overs action.

Vijay Hazare Trophy History

The tournament began in 2002-03 as a restructured national one-day competition, though its origins trace back to the Ranji One Day Trophy started in 1993-94. Tamil Nadu won the inaugural edition, defeating Punjab in the final, and have since become the most successful side alongside Karnataka with five titles each.

The competition was renamed the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2007-08 to honour the legendary Indian batsman who scored India’s first Test double-century and captained the side to its first Test series victory. Since then, 11 different teams have lifted the trophy, reflecting the competitive balance of Indian domestic cricket.

Recent years have seen first-time champions emerge, with Himachal Pradesh (2021-22), Haryana (2023-24) and Vidarbha (2025-26) all breaking their duck. The 2026-27 season promises to continue this trend of intense competition.

Why the Vijay Hazare Trophy Is Vital for Indian Cricket

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is the most important 50-over competition in Indian domestic cricket. It serves as the primary selection ground for India’s ODI and middle-format squads, with national selectors closely monitoring performances throughout the tournament. Players who dominate here often earn India A call-ups, IPL contracts and eventually senior national team berths.

For white-ball specialists, the tournament provides a structured 50-over environment to develop innings-building skills, death bowling and middle-over spin strategies. With the ODI format remaining central to ICC events, the Vijay Hazare Trophy ensures India maintains a healthy pipeline of List A talent.

The 2026-27 season arrives after India’s international schedule that includes the West Indies ODI series and the Afghanistan T20I series. It also serves as preparation for the Asian Games Cricket 2026, where India’s best limited-overs players will represent the nation.
